Chapter 1: Walking Blind - A Promise to the Dismayed

Summary

As modern technology improves, horizons shrink and we begin to know less, not more, because the complexity of everything is more than we can handle. We feel dismayed at our helplessness and the impossibility of seeing what is ahead. But what was Yahweh/God's original promise to the confused and dismayed Israelites? "I will lead the blind on their journey; by paths unknown I will guide them. I will turn darkness into light before them, and make crooked ways straight." Our very reliance on not having the answers, that is the way of faith. The promise did not say the blind wouldn't be blind; it said the blind would be led. It's in the not-knowing that God leads, by paths that are unknown but that can be trusted. We are asked to trust a guide, not a plan. And we're told that our very inabilities and blindnesses are essential to the journey. The blind are described as being on a journey. They are not told to stand still but to step forward. It's because of our lack that we move forward in faith.

Talking Points

  • Technology and Complexity: How does increasing technology make us feel more, not less, blind about the future?
  • The Promise to the Blind: What does it mean that God promised to lead the blind, not to give them sight?
  • Unknown Paths: Why is it significant that the journey of faith involves paths that are "unknown"?
  • Guide vs Plan: What's the difference between trusting a guide versus trusting a plan?
  • Moving Forward in Lack: How does acknowledging our limitations actually help us move forward?

This chapter resonated deeply with me. In our modern society, we're constantly bombarded with information, yet I often feel more uncertain than ever about where I'm headed. The idea that blindness is part of the journey is strangely comforting.

The distinction between trusting a guide versus a plan struck me. I'm a planner by nature, always wanting to know the next steps. This chapter challenges me to embrace the uncertainty and trust the journey.
